How are consultants actually getting their first 10 clients?

Not the advice version — the real version.

Almost nobody's first ten come from content, ads or a funnel. They come from people who already knew the person could do the work: former colleagues, former clients, and the one person who referred three others.

The useful question is therefore not "how do I get leads" but "who already knows what I am good at, and do they know I am available?"

If you are past ten, where did yours actually come from? And if you are at zero, what is stopping you telling the twenty people who already know your work?

Worth separating two problems that get treated as one: not enough people know you exist, and the people who know you do not know what you sell.

The second is much more common and much cheaper to fix. Most independents have never once told their network, plainly, what they do and who it is for.
