Tested: sending a paid sample edit before the full manuscript

I keep losing afternoons to authors who want a chunk of their book edited before they'll pay for anything. So this month I tried charging for that first sample instead of doing it as a freebie. Not sure yet whether the ones who balked were never going to buy anyway, or whether I've just put a tollgate on my best lead source. Curious if anyone here has run the same split.
