Testing a paid post as the newsletter's first ask

I have been writing my paid newsletter for fourteen months and about 900 people open it every week, and maybe nine of them have ever paid me anything. So I stopped guessing why and ran a proper test on the April cycle. I put one paid post behind a wall — a four-week beginner block, nothing else changed — and told nobody it existed.
