Paid conversion: worth it this early?

I'm still exploring the productised side of my service and I keep getting told paid ads will shortcut the whole thing. Honest answer: I don't know if that's true for someone at my stage, and I'd rather hear from people who've actually spent the money than from another tool's landing page.
