Two months ago I lost a $14k annual sponsorship because I quoted one number and waited. For the founders here who book a few sponsors a year on their own: I'm not sure what the rest of the calendar you're protecting looks like, but the mistake I made was treating one rate as two separate asks. Be specific — is your constraint (a) not knowing what number to quote, or (b) quoting fine and still getting ghosted after the pilot? Those need different fixes and I got them confused for two months. I only fixed one. Honestly still unsure about the other.
Take it from someone who just watched their biggest sponsorship walk: negotiate term 1 differently
Case study
Author-reported results.
- Starting situation
- For the last two years I ran one flat package: $4k for a 60-second mid-roll in each of four episodes. Three repeat sponsors. Then a wellness brand I'd wanted for a year said yes, then said no, then went quiet for six weeks.
- What changed
- I asked for their budget instead of quoting. They said $14k for the year. I quoted $14k without a pilot, without a performance clause, without a second tier. New territory for me; I wanted the number on the table before anyone could shrink it, and I let that instinct override the part of my brain that usually asks questions.
- Result
- Brief silence, then 'let us think.' They came back wanting full audio and video rights, exclusivity across my category, and an opt-out after episode one. I said yes to everything to keep the number. Episode one underperformed my own average, they exercised the opt-out, and I was left with a signed contract that was really a one-episode trial and a category exclusivity I could not re-sell for six months.
- Limitations
- One sponsor in one category. What I don't know is whether a pilot-first structure would have scared them off or whether it would have kept the $14k. What I do know is that a second reference point on the page — a smaller package, a pilot price — would have let them negotiate down instead of out. I've started quoting two numbers now, but it's one data point and it's mine.

Just raise your rate and hold it. Every time I've doubted my number and dropped it, the client was worse, not better. You don't negotiate with sponsors in a panic.
