Online Course Platforms: How to Compare Them

A checklist for comparing online course platforms: fees, ownership of students, email, payments, and what you pay as your sales grow.

Choosing a course platform is a long-term decision, because your students, content and sales history live inside it. Features are easy to compare; ownership and cost at scale are harder. Use the checklist below, then check each vendor's current pricing page, since plans change.

Count the full monthly cost

List what you need to run a course business: course hosting, checkout, an email tool, a website or landing pages, scheduling if you coach and a community if you offer one. Many platforms cover only some of these, so add the other subscriptions to the total. The creator stack cost calculator adds them up from your own inputs.

Check transaction fees and payment processing

Some platforms take a percentage of every sale on lower plans, on top of the card processor's fee. A fee that looks small on a $50 course matters when you sell thousands. Gbeya charges a 0% platform fee on your sales; you pay only the payment processor. Ask every vendor the same question and write the answer down with the date.

Who owns the student list?

Make sure you can export every student's details and their purchase history. If the list lives only inside the platform, you rent your audience. You should be able to email students directly and move them if you ever leave.

Look at email, not only video

Selling courses is mostly about email: nurturing leads, launching and following up with students. A platform with weak email forces you to bolt on another tool. Check segmentation, automations and deliverability controls.

Test the student experience

Buy a competitor's cheap course and note how easy it is to log in, resume a lesson and get help on a phone. Most students learn on a phone.

Check how it handles more than courses

Many creators expand into coaching, memberships, a podcast or digital downloads. A platform that supports these under one login saves migration work later. Gbeya creator courses sit alongside bookings, community and store in the same workspace.

Decide with a short trial

Build one real lesson, one checkout and one email sequence on your shortlist. An afternoon of use will reveal more than a feature table. Read the full course guide: how to create and sell an online course.
